In August 2015, the USGBC officially awarded LEED Gold certification to the Jefferson Houston Elementary School in Alexandria, VA. Opened in September 2014, the new 125,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art facility serves students in Kindergarten through 8th Grade. Staengl Engineering constructed a detailed energy model of the building and provided energy analysis and consulting services to the design team to help meet the efficiency targets set for the project.

The Jefferson Houston Elementary School is an approximately 125,000 sq. ft. three storey, elementary school in Alexandria, Virginia. The building includes a gymnasium, classrooms, administration areas, kitchen and dining facilities, and support space.
SOLUTION
The results of the energy analysis predicted an approximate energy savings of 48.2% for the Design Case compared to the code-required Baseline Case. Three ECMs were evaluated. The energy cost savings below code for the design case including all three ECMs were found to be 48.74%, which qualifies for 16 EA Credit 1 points under LEED 2009.
